Avalanche Deposits Interpretation: Bezengi Glacier Case Study

May 2020

This study evaluates the effectiveness of Sentinel-2 satellite imagery for identifying avalanche deposits on glaciers. Despite the significant role of avalanche-fed snow in glacier nourishment, the applicability of Sentinel-2 data for detecting such deposits has not been thoroughly assessed until now.

The research outlines methodological approaches for delineating glacier boundaries, avalanche paths, and deposits using visual interpretation techniques with various spectral compositions. The findings highlight both the advantages and limitations of using satellite imagery for studying avalanche-fed glaciers in the Caucasus, ultimately enhancing the ability to assess their contribution to glacier mass balance.
